‘Friends of the Family’ is the first book in a six book Colter Family Saga spanning over a hundred years. In a time of upheaval and change, it is a story of survival. The fragile fabric of society has been torn to shreds and all that is left is a commitment to those we love. A commitment to do whatever is necessary to protect home and family. It’s a love story not only of family and home, but of the love of friends met along the path of this incredible journey.

Friends of the Family The Colter Saga Book 1 edition by Joel Baker Literature Fiction eBooks

I enjoyed this post-apocalyptic story of Jesse and Sarah Colter, their family, human friends and "the friends of the family" - the canine friends that adopted the Colters.

Jesse, Sarah and clan moved from Liberty, Ohio to Haven, Tennessee to a simpler way of life in a valley long lived in by Jesse's family. Good vs. evil, family, protecting what is important to you - this book covers all of these things.

There are some editing issues in the book but I didn't find them too distracting. Jesse and Sarah are well developed characters but I wish their children's characters had been explored more and I especially wish the dogs had been in the story more.

I do know that there is a second book in the Colter saga - The Way of the Dogs (The Colter Saga) - and I'm going to be reading it next. So I hope my questions about the family and the dogs are answered in it.

This was an excellent low-key example of post-apocalyptic fiction and I appreciated the tale very much.

Friends of the Family The Colter Saga Book 1 edition by Joel Baker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was torn between 4 & 5 stars on this book. Although I became enthralled with the premise of the story line, which presents the reader with the backstory of how Jesse Colter and his family came back to Haven after the 'go-back, it also became a frustrating read due to lack of editing.

The story line is great, with plenty of action and excitement throughout the context of the book. It portrays the love of family and the individual strengths presented in each character to where I felt a connection with Jesse, Sarah and their boys. This story presents scenarios of the good, bad and ugly of society since the go-back, projecting a reality, imho, of how life would or could be after a major fall or collapse of society. I enjoyed and liked the inclusion of the dogs in this story and its interesting depiction of how the dogs came about in their being. It adds a nice mystery to a good flowing story.

As mentioned above, this book could have used some editing. A good proofreading would have caught a lot of missing words and other issues. I can handle a hand full of these, but when it is consistant throughout the book, it becomes distracting.

Even with all that said, this story line has peaked my interest enough to get the second book of this series, which appears to be more about the dogs. I'm also curious as to where Mr. Baker is taking this story 80 years later.
From Ohio to Tennessee, a family is held together by triumphs and sadness.

The Colters learn to live in a time before the "go-back". They are protected by the Black Dogs! (Wait until you meet them and see what they are capable of doing).

Of course, there are some unsavory characters that need to be dealt with by the Colters.

This is a story of the family love that ties them together through all of their days on earth.

I guarantee that you will have tears in your eyes near the end of this one. Poignant and written from the heart.

Most highly recommended!
Not sure just how to review this novel. I did like it, even if I did see many things that just couldn't work. But all that said and done, the novel was enjoyable reading.

I don't believe that "the end" would come like the novel suggests. It would take a lot longer, as well as be a lot worse for a long, long time. The Colter family seemed to make out just fine in the early days of "the end". It shouldn't have been that way. If you wan to know what you're in for, turn off the power to everything in the area for two days. No lights, no pump motors, no freezers, no refrigeration, no gasoline pumps, no trucks, ...., and no food or water. Try that for two or three days. It ain't no fun, believe me! and the Colter family put up with it without too much trouble for months. No, I don't think so.

I wish the author had started the novel after the initial "the end", then just not mentioned it much. It would be a bunch of city folks trying to farm and land for food. That alone is immensely difficult in itself. I used to be a farmer growing up ...the Colter family would not have made it through one year, they'd have starved to death and the animals would have starved.

Sorry, but... All that said? Yep, gave it four stars for just pure entertainment and fun reading.

What's there is great. What was a three-hour read could easily become an 800-page novel-ripe-for-screenplay with some fleshing out and a bit more unsymapthetic drama. The heroes all thrive and the bad guys all die horribly, all of which is greatly satisfying but none of which is savored. It's like a tale heard over a few beers instead of fully 3rd-person-omnicient prose, and the impact is diluted. It's like the publisher's deadline was an animating force in the storyline.

I see the risk of starting a cyclical narrative, wherein the "period of peace and prosperity" endures a "new threat," which strangely resembles the old threats, which is of course nothing new. However, even if greed and selfishness are the antagonists' perpetually underlying motivations, the potential to bring the characters and events into much clearer focus with a lot of additional exposition and narrative is sadly unrealized, so the evolution becomes a comfortable serial instead of a rich tapestry.

But again, what's there is great. Happily missing are (but for a tiny handful of exceptions) the bad or non-existent edits, erroneous names, missing dialogue and irritating whatnot most often found in low-cost offerings. It's obvious the author put some thought into his characters and is also imbued with a superior talent - it would be well worth the effort to take the (so far?) five-book series and turn them into two fully-developed multi-generational novels. I would purchase that.
