Saga, a vagabond gunfighter from Samarkand, and the rogue scholar Richter have spent their lives in search of fortune and dodging the consequences of their actions. When they accidentally unleash an ancient evil while robbing the wrong tomb, the pair find themselves in more trouble than they can handle. Alongside the aged thief Grail and the reticent knight Ialae, whose ties to the Church may yet set the Saga and Richter at each others throats, they must stay one step ahead of an Inquisition that would see them all in chains and try save their world from the undead horror their rival Kage now serves. Now they must find it in themselves to leave the path of least resistance to walk a road of ruin.

I have to say that after reading RR Martian's Ice & Fire, Glen Cooks The Black Company, Abercrombie's The First Law and Anthony Ryan's Blood Song: A Raven's Shadow I was in a desperate search for something "Good" to read and that is written for ADULTS!
This story was just the tonic! After reading other less worthy ebooks while on my search, I came across this novel and decided to take a chance. What a stroke of luck!

The world was totally believable to me (I had just watched the movie Hidalgo), I envisioned this world as somewhere in the Middle East around the 1800's, where black powder and guns are known but the dagger and sabre were still the common weapon.
I would consider this an action/adventure novel with the plot starting at point A and ending at point B, our hero's then travel from point A to point B and we are in on the journey and adventure and it's told beautifully! I have never read such wonderful prose as in this Novel, the plot and journey was linear but the telling of the tale was what kept me turning the pages. Bravo!

But still.............
We have our two hero's and we get introduced to more later and for me, I wish there was MORE usage of these two characters. The two, Grail and Ialae could have been used more to get more emotion out of Saga and Richter, we could have learned more of Grail so that we would have more invested in him, I just feel that both were totally underutilized! I wanted more from Ialae and Saga and even perhaps Richter and Ialae (at about 70-75%, I felt shades of Brokeback Mountain with Saga and Richter because of the lack of "emotion" between Saga/Richter and Ialae and the feeling that both Grail and Ialae were just there as throwaway's).

As far as the travel goes, why not even one mention of a "House of Ill Repute", or beggars in the street, not even in Ward?!

The one Major problem for me was the "escape" out of Luxor (City of Light", in chapter 2 the escape is made thru the Gate of the Teeth and in capter 3 our hero's eventually stop to eat, discuss etc.., the fire for the camp comes from the wagon that they had to make their escape but as we read on, we now have them again being pursued and eventually a fight breaks out between Saga and the female guard (Ialae) that Saga had punched at the Gate of Teeth (in chapter 2), so what the heck just happen? Did the author write the escape sequence at night, go to sleep and the next morning forget what he wrote last night and start over again??! I mean, in chapter 3, we find the female guard in the back of the cart, wasn't she seen when they had their camp and Richter was tearing the wagon apart for fire wood??

This could have been easily caught and correct as well as some word errors such as locus for focus and from instead of form etc...
But bottom line, this is a Adult novel with "unique" prose that will have you turning pages, I for one, will be keeping my eye out for this Author to see if he lives up to his promise as a writer.

A very good book. I have recommended to my friends and suggest you do the same. Looking forward to more of his works
This is a very engaging and well written book! Great story, good character development, and a quick read. Love it! Hope to see more from this author.
Really an excellent book. I was surprised it was only being published by with a book of this entertainment value. This author has incorporated new aspects into the old world of fantasy. Obviously a lover of the genre but with fresh and mature ideas that make this book worth reading and owning.
This isn't just another cookie cutter fantasy novel. The author has created an entirely new world and introduces a story that grabs you from the first page and keeps you wanting more. The characters are dark and mysterious yet subtly humorous and intelligent. The politics, geography, and history of this world unfold naturally as the story progresses, opening it up in a way that few authors are able to achieve. Buy this book and by the end of the first chapter you won't be able to put it down.

What a great book, and a refreshing take on the fantasy genre. The pace of the book is unrelenting, making it hard to put down. It hardly slows down from beginning to end, but without skimping on the details. The fight scenes are excellently described and flow like you're watching a movie. The author opens up this immersive world while not bogging down the story or making you feel lost. There's magic, monsters, demons, and inquisitors. Oh, and there's guns.
The story follows two friends and their (mis)adventures in the hazardous occupation of "archeology" (see treasure hunting). During one particularly dangerous, yet lucrative, discovery, they unearth more than they bargain for. They are set on a journey that takes them through vast cities, forgotten barrows and ancient forests, hunting down an artifact with the power to change the world, while being hunted themselves by the powers that be.
It's gritty, it's dark, it's exciting, it's fun.
